When it comes to banking birth products, one tends to think only of cord blood. But did you know that placental blood and tissue are also important sources of stem cells? The placenta is especially rich in mesenchymal stem cells* (MSCs), which is being investigated for future use in regenerative medicine.1

*Studies have shown that mesenchymal cells may prove useful in regenerative medicine. Regenerative medicine is an emerging field and the quantity of mesenchymal cells necessary for treatment is not yet known. Treatments using mesenchymal cells for regenerative medicine are investigational and are not consistent with current labeling. Stem cells from the placenta and cord blood are currently only indicated to rebuild blood.

Expertise, Experience, and Technology

Although cord blood is a standard of care for many of today’s therapies, medical research in areas such as regenerative medicine has the potential to create new and more advanced therapies. Storing placental blood and tissue may offer access to such opportunities as they are developed.
